Cancer Myths & Facts


There are certain myths which dwell in our minds about cancer, which can lead to unnecessary confusion and interrupt with the right treatment process. Not only World’s Cancer Day, but any day is just suitable to burst forth the truth about cancer, spread awareness and debunk the myths.

Myth: If someone in the family has suffered from cancer, then you will also get it

Fact: It is not just about genes that you get cancer nor is it contagious. Other factors such as lifestyle and environment too play an important role.

Myth: Artificial sweetener can cause cancer
                               
  
Fact: Since there are no evidences to conclude this statement. So the artificial sweeteners such as saccharine, aspartame or sucralose till now are indisputably safe.

Myth: Biopsy can spread cancer 

 
Fact: Biopsy is a medical procedure that involves withdrawing a small sample of tissue from abnormal tissue in the body for examination and usually a first step in diagnosis of cancer. It is a misconception and you should not give up the treatment process because of this.

Myth: Dark skinned people are never to get cancer

Fact: Dark skin people have less probability of getting burnt in sun. But any one whether fair or dark, exposed or unexposed to sun can get skin cancer.

       

Myth: Only Smokers get Lung Cancer 
 
Fact: Though smokers are greater risk of being diagnosed with cancer but people who have never been exposed to smoking might also get it.

Myth: Treatment for cancer kills more than it cures

Myth: Only elderly women are more likely to get cervical cancer

Fact: According to NHS UK, women of any age may develop cervical cancer though it generally affects women between the ages of 30-45.
