Alzheimer’s Disease- a Major Concern among the Graying Population in India

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease in which the healthy brain tissue degenerates. It is the most common cause of dementia which is the loss of memory and other intellectual abilities. Like all great populations of the world, the vast population of India is facing a crisis among the elderly and infirm.  The World Alzheimer’s Report recently released says that by 2020, around 10 million Indians above 50 years of age are likely to suffer from dementia. The number would by 2040 increase to around 22 million people. Doctors believe that in India, more than 50 percent with dementia require caregivers to take care of them.

This can actually come as big shocker for India as the country is yet to put in place a health program for its graying population. The country has seriously underestimated the global burden of dementia. The demographic ageing of population is proceeding more rapidly than it had earlier been anticipated and this is more applicable especially in case of India. The World Health Organization has declared dementia to be a health priority. It has also stated that countries including India need to develop a plan with the greater number of dementia patients.

September is observed as the world’s Alzheimer’s month and 21st September is the world Alzheimer’s day. This year on this day camps on dementia awareness and Memory Walks based on this year’s topic ‘Dementia, a journey of caring’ was held at various colleges and hospitals across India.
Medicines are often used to slow down the rate of Alzheimer’s at which the symptoms become worse. The benefit of these drugs is however small. It is believed by many that Alzheimer’s can be treated with a natural remedy and this natural remedy is NONI fruit. The antioxidants present in NONI fruit slow age related process in the body.

A recent study has found that an antioxidant cocktail of Vitamin E and Vitamin C present in NONI fruit has a significant effect on reducing the physical signs and cognitive decline seen in Alzheimer’s disease. The antioxidant present in NONI fruit protect cells against free radicals which are single molecules that latch onto a cell and cause damage.

NONI can not only fight off dementia but also reduce the risk factors by 25 percent and this means 3 million fewer cases of Alzheimer’s cases worldwide.
